Heavy Hitters June: Sage Francis
Sage Francis is widely considered one of our generation’s greatest lyricists by those familiar with his unique brand of hip-hop. His career was born of gifted wordplay, creating vivid narratives to instigate as well as inspire. An accumulation of public disdain and personal turmoil, Francis’ lyrics are more about storming the castle than watching the throne. Several of Francis’ albums have charted on Billboard’s Top 200 as well as iTunes’ top 5 for hip-hop in both the US and in the UK. In 2016, Sage Francis was granted an honorary patronage by the prestigious Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, for his contributions to literature. Outside of running Strange Famous Records, Francis continues to work on solo music, while developing other projects that serve to keep him grounded at home rather than relentlessly touring, as he’s done for the past 20 years.
Tricks of the Trade (The Magic in the Breakdown)
Sage Francis will discuss the importance of sharpening your skills as a writer by starting with the fundamentals, eventually ending with the “magic” one needs to manage after developing their own voice. This workshop will be part instruction, part demonstration, part song, part poem, part career development, part Q&A, and a whole lot of talking sh*t while backing it all the f*ck up.
